A note from our Executive Director

Mindfulness and care

Over the past few weeks, our state and our country have been inundated with distressing news and unbelievable acts of violence. Sadly, it is a common occurrence – one we may sometimes prefer to avoid. The recent events highlight the need, more than ever, for mental health clinics like ours and the intervention services we provide.

While there aren’t words to describe the anxiety and fear many of us feel, there are ways in which we can help ourselves and our family members process the news. Talking about our thoughts, feelings, and worries with one another is important. Listening does not mean solving the problem or offering solutions to a person’s fears. Listening is an active process of acknowledgement of another individual.

Having fun is also an important piece of healing. Get outside, enjoy our summer weather, and practice a few mindfulness exercises. The easiest exercise is to use your five senses. Pick five things you can see and reflect on their details. Find four things you can touch and concentrate on the way they feel under your fingertips. Identify three sounds and concentrate on what they are and where they are coming from. Take deep breaths as you sit or walk outside. What do you smell? Does it smell good? Fresh? Finally, concentrate on one thing you can taste – even if it’s just an empty mouth.

Our staff is here to help clients and community members. The Family Counseling Center offers crisis assistance including a 24-Hour Crisis Hotline, 24-Hour Domestic Violence Hotline, mobile school crisis counseling, and more.

Your support helps us provide these services to the community, to those in need. Our impacts and successes are directly connected to your donations, advocacy, and partnership. Thank you.

Best wishes,

Michael
