We’re rooted in our community

The Family Counseling Center has a long history helping community members in Gloversville and Fulton County. Established in 1976 as a result of a cooperative effort among community clergy, human service professionals, and civic-minded individuals – all of whom worked on a voluntary basis. When we started, our mission was to answer the community’s need for individual, marriage, and youth counseling, and we continue that work today, forty-five years later.

Family Counseling Center began in the basement of the First Congregational United Church of Christ on East Fulton Street in Gloversville. When we grew, we moved into the Gloversville YWCA and the former Gloversville Day Nursery and in 1993 we settled into our home at 11-21 Broadway in Gloversville. The location was chosen for its central location and close proximity to public transportation. Since then we’ve continued to grow and occupy up to six locations in Gloversville, Johnstown, and Fort Plain, and have a team of school-based counselors in Fulton and Montgomery counties. In 2020, we became a certified telehealth provider allowing us to partner with other agencies and serve individuals as far away as Rome, New York. Our staff has grown too, from a handful of volunteers to a group of nearly 100 highly trained professionals.

Throughout, our goals have remained the same. We are as committed today as we were in 1976 to help meet the needs of our community members, providing superior care and support to those who seek mental health counseling, and partnering with our neighbors to help Build a Healthy Community.

We are excited to share with you the next phase in our growth. Our expansion and renovation of the Broadway office will be completed this autumn and we hope to welcome you, our community, to a ribbon cutting ceremony in October 2021. The building will house all of our staff under one roof, allowing for the breakdown of workplace silos, and putting Children’s Services and Health Coaching at its core.
