The Turning Point Program is a unique Program for children ages 5 – 18 who are experiencing behavioral and/or emotional issues due to mental health diagnoses. Children eligible for the Program reside in Fulton, Montgomery, Hamilton, Herkimer, Oneida and surrounding counties. TURNING POINT is certified by New York Stated Office of Mental Health.

TURNING POINT is NOT foster care. The Program is voluntary ~ all birth parents retain custody of their child throughout the child’s tenure and are an important part of the “team”, helping the child achieve her/his goals. Children who are in the custody of New York State (Department of Social Services) are also welcomed into the Program.

Trained and certified “host” families provide a home-like setting for each child. TURNING POINT Family Specialists work with the child and their host family on achieving individualized treatment goals while a Birth Parent Counselor works with the birth family. Each TURNING POINT family receives understanding, guidance, support, and opportunities for learning and growth, while working toward the reunification of the family.

Often the symptoms and behaviors associated with mental illness contribute to a child’s family feeling overwhelmed. Parents have said that they feel “guilty” or “inadequate when not being able to maintain their child at home, when frequently the root cause is associated with other family members’ mental health issues, substance abuse, domestic violence, and/or physical disabilities.

TURNING POINT is always searching for caring individuals who would consider hosting a child in their home.
